Muncie Artists Guild was first organized in 1952 as the Amateur Artists Association. The Guild met at the home of William Spencer. The third floor of the home was used as a studio where the artists met and painted. The association's first exhibit was in Ball Stores' Blue Room on June 9, 1952.
There were painting excursions to favorite places, such as the Mathews Covered Bridge and the old gravel pit on Cornbread Rd. Many members took art classes at Ball State and Dr. Alice Nichols became a mentor to them. She encouraged the members to exhibit at the Ball State Art Gallery (now the Ball State Museum of Art).
Hoping to attract some professional artists to their group, the name was changed to Muncie Artists Guild. In 1994, the group had the good fortune to become an affiliate of Minnetrista Center. The group meets monthly at the center and enjoys a variety of programs.
